CHANGE IS A GOOD THING
By Derwinn Green
Personally, I don’t find it difficult to say goodbye to yesterdays. But I must admit that at times, I find it challenging to look tomorrow into the face. Sometimes I feel stuck but I remind myself to keep moving and keep doing. A large part of maturing involves literally changing ones habits, taking on different forms and learning to be at peace with these new changes, whatever they may be. Being honest with oneself however, is probably the most important aspect of maturing. I’ve always felt that until one can look them self in the face (no pun intended) putting aside all “delusions of grandeur”, growth is nearly impossible.
2009 was a great year. I learned many new things about myself. I am learning to look myself in the face and honestly self analyze. As an extrovert, I have learned that expression can be accomplished not solely by way of speech, but also by actions and body mannerisms. Often, this is the first thing someone notices about us. Learning to control our expressions can aid greatly in achieving balance. This equilibrium is the key to mental health, emotional stability and inner peace.
Rejuvenate: Artistically, I have reasoned that reinvention is quite healthy. Changing forms and states, actually helps me to discover new facets of my personality. Anais Nin once said that life is a process of becoming a combination of states we have to go through. I challenge everyone to leave their “baggage” behind on December 31st at the strike of midnight. Of course, honor your responsibilities but essentially, try to start the New Year fresh with an open mind and spirit. Change something for the better and learn to live with it. Make new friends. It is with each new acquaintance that a new world within us is born.
Renew: We live in a world infused with suffering, dishonesty, mistreatment and abuse of all forms. But we are not powerless. Let’s not close our eyes to the things happening before us. Instead, realize that there is a possibility for positive change. And one of the most useful and positive ways of doing this is by educating the younger generation. Instill in them the importance of humanity; help them feel good about themselves so that they will in turn take good care of themselves, others and the planet Earth.
Rejoice: Challenge yourself to be a better self in your way of thinking and actions. Redirect your energies. Accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative in your course of action, speech, thought and mannerisms. Repel negative energies. Change your form. Challenge tomorrow. Make your 2010 count for something other than 365 days on the calendar.
Alas, here’s to new beginnings…Chin!

Voici un dessin d'Alair à partir d'une photo d'Halloween 2008: "Jack-ohhhhh"
Le voici repris dans une de mes composition: "Oh mon Jack":
Samhain— from Irish Samhain, cf. Scottish Gaelic Samhuinn, Manx Gaelic Sauin and Old Irish Samain — means "summer's end", from sam meaning "summer" and fuin meaning "end"). It is a festival held on October 31–November 1 in Gaelic cultures. Many scholars think that it was the beginning of the Celtic year. Samhain marked the end of the harvest, the end of the "lighter half" of the year and beginning of the "darker half". The Gaels believed that the border between this world and the otherworld became thin on Samhain.

I also wanted to share with you a text that my model, Derwinn Green, wrote after the session.
Freedom
I can think of no better way to write about freedom than to sit down, close my eyes and just let go. This simple act is the freedom of expression. But is it really freedom of expression if no one is witnessing it? Of course it is. I am. I am a person. I am a spirit much like you. And I am a human being.
There are many forms of freedom and there are many forms of prisons. One prison that I can literally say we all fall victim to, at one time or another, are eyes. What I mean by this is that we allow ‘the eyes’ of others to be our prison, a prison that hinders our freedom. When, in fact, instead of allowing the eyes of others to be our prison, we could very well use the eyes of others to be our push towards freedom. I am an artist. A visual artist. A freedom artist. By that I mean that I am an artist of many different forms. There is no theory behind what I do. I simply express with my body--through pose, through movement, through speech and through stillness. This is my art. My freedom.
Expression is the one quality that binds us all. Silence and stillness are also forms of expression. Shouting is a form of expression. Whispering is a form of expression. And visually, how we use the body is a form of expression. I chose to use my body in this series as my way to express the irony of freedom. My creation of photos that ordinarily people might consider daring or risqué is my freedom of expression. I execute this freedom not with the intention to imitate or mock, but to draw parallels and create discourse. Imitation is not and has never been my motive. I, as an artist, am moved by different states. And no state can ever truly be replicated. These photos represent the fine line between freedom and confinement. The rope represents the eyes. The prison. For what are we as people if we cannot and do not express ourselves? Ask yourself: What is my prison?
The creative process may be complicated or simple, but in freedom art, it comes and goes. When the session is finished, I am finished. And we, the photographer and I, move onto another state, another series. The camera is my medium. And You, your eyes, are not my prison. You are my public. I embrace you with Freedom.
